Course Update (01/13/2012)
From RD Austin Stonebraker
We have been blessed with enough snow, between 5-7 inches, to pull off the race despite having some possible mixed precipitation coming on Friday. After walking parts of the course it is apparent that we can hold a race, albeit shorter, on our XC network. The single track is too thin and snowshoes went right through to rocks underneath - I verified this myself. Our plan will be to let the possible freezing rain seep into the top portions of the snow and set up. We will then go out and groom about two widths of snowmobile track to break the crust after the temperature starts to go back down and the air has dried out. That should give about 24 hrs of the loose granular from under the possible crust layer to set up. Expect the course to be soft granular in places where the snowmobile has passed. I hope to have one small section of single track that will be broken after any rain has passed. The "Breaker" hill from last year is expected to be a part of the course and sure to please! In terms of length we are forced to cut out most of the single track since snow depth is too varied and it is too easy to strike small rocks and stumps through soft snow. The expected length is now closer to 2.5 miles if not a little shorter. Don't let the length fool you; there is still plenty of elevation change as is suggested in the name of the race! You start at the highest elevation and will have to climb back! We are excited to have the race come together and I hope that you will join us! Sunday is expected to be clear and sunny with chilly temps - great for snowshoe racing! -AS
NOTE: We have added a 1 lap or 2 lap option due to the expected length of the course. Both distances will be considered an official race but you must declare your decision before the event. Any two lapper who begs out after one lap will be a DNF.
Course Description: The school has a simple loop of very smooth but hilly cross country trail (running and nordic skiing) that has been improved this fall to include narrow rolling single track within the loop through beautiful mixed hardwood forest. Expect to pick up the pace on the wide open nordic trail between navigating twisting single-track that will test your agility and stamina as you move up and down hills. You will find a couple short "steepies" on the course that will warm you up fast! The course will be approximitely 5.5K. The course should be challenging but fun and very beautiful at the same time!
*SPECIAL WINTER WEATHER ANNOUCEMENT* (Updated 09/17/2009)
New Hampshire winter weather can be very unpredictable and occasionally make travel hazardous. For the safety of our volunteers, competitors, and family a final determination on the status of our races will be made the Thursday prior to each race. The status of the race ("ON" or "POSTPONED") will be detailed on each individual race webpage. You must check each race webpage prior to the race to assure the race will be held. Every attempt will be made to reschedule all postponed events. Pre-registered competitors will be given a refund or rain check.
All of the proceeds to benefit:
