2012 Women's US Mountain Running Team qualifier
This is the sole qualifier for the top four (4) USATF women's spots.  The team will represent the US in Italy in 2012.
ELITE FEMALE RUNNERS AND HOMESTAYS:

We understand that mountain runners don't have multi-million dollar sponsorship deals.  Therefore anything we can do to help defray the costs of elite runners looking to make the Women's US Mountain Running team we will do.  This includes waiving entry fees and homestays for runners.  If you are an elite female runner coming to Loon Mountain in 2012, please send a running resume and note to Junior US Mountain Running Team manager Paul Kirsch at pkirsch2@gmail.com to see how he can help you out.  We do have a limited number of homestays available so the sooner you can contact us, the better.

COURSE DETAILS:

The course starts at a dirt parking area along the Pemigewasset River and winds its way through the parking area to the service trails heading up Loon Mountain. It follows a combination of dirt trail, service roads, and ski trails to the Summit Lodge at the top of the Gondola.  The course works its way over and up North Peak via the infamous Upper Walking Boss black diamond trail and then back over to the top of the Gondola. This is an ascent-only race. The race averages approximately a 10% grade with some sections of more than 40%!
We've taken on the mission in 2012 to help feed the hungry in our community.  One way we're doing this is by collecting non-perishable food items at all of our events in 2012.  As a 'thank you' for helping us feed the hungry, if you bring a food donation to Loon we'll give you the pre-registration entry fee price ($20) on the day of the event.
MILE DESCRIPTIONS:

MILE 1
Starts in a dirt parking lot along side the river at the base of the mountain.  Gradual fast first mile as you cross the paved parking lot and join up with the cat-track heading up the mountain.  Continues on a rolling gradual uphill for the first mile.

MILE 2
Real beginning of the uphill section with your first decent climb to Camp 3 base camp lift.  At about 1.8 Miles, you cut across the mountain on a gradual rolling even flat section until about the 2.5 mile mark.  The course then leaves the cat-track and starts on the grass ski slope on the first tough uphill section which is steeper than Mt. Washington.  This occurs right before Mile 3.

MILE 3 & 4
First 1/4 mile continues up steeply then cuts across for a brief recovery before joining back up with the cat-track for 1.5 miles at approximately Mt. Washington level grade.  The 4 mile marker is right before the lower peak at the gondola.  There is a water stop here.

MILE 5
Right after you hit this peak you descend on a steep 100 foot section, then a gradual 1/3 mile descent before making a right turn and heading up a 40% grade for the last 6/10th of a mile on the Upper Walking Boss trail to the finish.  This is a very tough last section where less than 15 of the 200+ finishers are able to run this entire pitch.
